Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery
Wanda Kaniewski, MD, FACS

Dr. Wanda Kaniewski is a board-certified general surgeon with Fellowship training in advanced laparoscopy. Dr. Kaniewski’s general surgery residency training was through the Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C., and she completed her laparoscopic surgery fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX. Dr. Kaniewski has been distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).  She is the Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at The Minimally Invasive Surgery Hospital.

Dr. Kaniewski's safety record is among the best, and that's because our focus is, and has always been on doing the safest surgery possible.  Dr. Kaniewski takes the time to make sure each patient is taken care of as thoroughly and carefully as possible, pre-operatively, during surgery, and post-operatively. At this time, Dr. Kaniewski is the only bariatric surgeon in a several state area around Kansas who performs the Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch, Biliopancreatic Diversion and Revisions of previously failed operations laparoscopically.

Dr. Kaniewski's professional honors include being awarded Top Gun Champion by the American College of Surgeons at the Laparoscopic Skills Challenge and receiving the Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Surgeon Achievement Award from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. In addition, she is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO).

Office Staff

Receptionist

Chris is our receptionist at the front desk.  She is usually the first person you will speak with.  Chris is happy to answer questions, give directions, orient you to our website, schedule appointments and forward your calls.  During your visits she will direct you to where you need to go and make sure you have everything you need.

Office Bariatric Coordinator

Angela is our Office Bariatric Coordinator.  She is your point of contact to get you ready for your surgery.  Angie will help you coordinate your insurance and financial needs, obtain insurance pre-authorization for your operation, facilitate obtaining your medical work-up, and ensure that we maintain everything on schedule.

Nursing Staff

Surgical Nursing Coordinator

Carla is our Surgical Nursing Coordinator.  She is one of the first nurses you will meet during your pre-operative visits, on the day of your surgery and during your follow-up visits.  She will ensure that your operation day proceeds smoothly.   Carla has over 25 years of medical/surgical nursing care.  She finds great satisfaction in caring for our bariatric patients, and helping them meet their weight loss goals.  

Clinical Bariatric Coordinator

Kaye is our Clinical Bariatric Coordinator, and a patient herself.  She ensures that patients are properly prepared for their operation.  The week or two prior to your surgery she will identify any changes or problems, review your medical work-up for completeness, answer questions and ensure you are prepared for your operation day.  Kaye will also be there to help you recover from surgery and ensure that you understand what to do next.  Kaye has over 15 years of medical/surgical nursing experience.  She will help ensure your weight loss surgery success.

Clinical Nurse

Fran is our pre-operative nurse, and a patient herself.  She will meet you on the day of your surgery and take care of you till you are ready to go back to the operating room.  Fran will also help keep your family and friends informed as to your progress.  She has over 30 years of medical/surgical nursing experience.

Administrative Staff

Chief Executive Officer

Paramjeet Sabharwal, MD is our Chief Executive Officer.  The CEO coordinates our Program efforts such as personnel, office, business development, corporate governance, and marketing.  The Institute for Advanced Bariatric Surgery at MISH was a long goal concept of his.  He recognized early on that bariatric patients can significantly benefit and improve upon their success from a program providing coordinated and continuous bariatric care under one roof.  He has set high standards.  We are already a JCAHO (Joint Commission of Accreditation Hospital Organization) accredited hospital, and we continue to try to improve and excel in the care we provide.

The program is widely respected for high standards and a commitment to quality, not only in the performance of weight loss surgery but also in the aftercare, which is so vital for successful outcomes and results. 

VP of Operations

Stephanie is our Vice President of Operations.  Her job is to ensure that the program is compliant with state and federal regulations in areas such as: JCAHO accreditation, COLA accreditation and the Kansas Department of Health.  She also handles all patient/family concerns and grievances.

Anesthesia

Our highly qualified anesthesiology team includes anesthesiologists along with certified registered nurse anesthetists. Our team has over 15 years of experience providing quality anesthesia care and are trained in bariatric surgery and the special needs of the morbidly obese patient. Our anesthesia team holds memberships in the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Kansas Society of Anesthesiologists, The Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia, and the American Medical Association.

Chief Anesthesiologist
Nigist Asfaha, MD

Dr. Nigist Asfaha is a very experienced bariatric and trauma anesthesiologist.  Dr. Asfaha completed her anesthesiology trainining at The Downstate Kings County Hospital, in New York, New York.  Dr. Asfaha was the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia at The D.C. General Hospital, in Washington, D.C., overseeing their very busy trauma center.  Dr. Asfaha has developed a special interest in bariatric surgery anesthesia.  Her experience with bariatric surgery dates back to The Mason Shunt era of weight loss surgery. 

Nurse Anesthetist
Jeffery W. Glasgow, CRNA, MSN, BSN

Mr. Glasgow is a certified registered nurse anesthetist, receiving his certification from the University of Kansas Medical Center.  He received his nursing degree from Baker University School of Nursing, where he served as president of the Student Nurse Association and class vice president.  He is licensed both in the state of Kansas and Missouri as an RN and CRNA. He previously served as Assistant Chief Anesthetist at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. Jeff belongs to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia.

Jeff has a special interest in bariatric surgery and has practiced this specialty since 2002. He understands that bariatric patients have special needs for anesthesia and pain control, and makes it his goal to facilitate the patients’ transformation as painless and stress-free as possible.

Shane St. Clair, CRNA

Mr. St. Clair is a certified registered nurse anesthetist.  He received his certification from the Truman Medical Center, and completed his masters degree at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.  He was distinguished with membership in the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society.  He is licensed in the state of Kansas as an RN and CRNA. Shane belongs to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

Radiology 

Chief Radiologist
Stephen N. Blatt, MD

Dr. Stephen Blatt heads the Radiology Department and is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology, with additional certification in Nuclear Radiology. Along with general diagnostic radiology, MIS-Hospital offers general x-ray, fluoroscopy, CT scan, and C-Arm fluoroscopy. Dr. Blatt received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine and completed his residency at Presbyterian Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, Denver, CO. Dr. Blatt completed a Nuclear Medicine post-graduate fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, which included training in ultrasound and CT. Dr. Blatt's practice areas include diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine including thyroid therapy and cardiology, computed tomography, ultrasound, and MRI.

Radiology Technician

Misty

Misty is a state-certified radiology technician.  She works along with the radiologist to perform various radiologic studies.  She will be there to help you during your band studies and x-ray adjustments on the fluoroscopy table.

Nutritionist 

Bariatric Nutrition Specialist
Kuda Mushaninga, MS, RD, LD

Ms. Mushaninga, or Kuda, as she likes to be called, is the staff bariatric nutrition specialist. Kuda is a registered dietician with the American Dietetic Association, and Certified in Adult Weight Management Training.  She has received many honors such as Young Dietician of The Year by the Kansas City Dietetic Association, member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and more. Kuda offers one-on-one  and group sessions to teach and discuss both pre- and post-bariatric surgery nutritional requirements and needs. In addition, Kuda leads our monthly Nutrition Classes.  These classes are available to all patients at any time at no charge.

Psychology 

Clinical Psychologist
Timothy A. Post, Psy.D.

Dr. Post is a licensed Psychologist in both the state of Kansas and Missouri.  He enjoys teaching and is part of the University of Missouri teaching faculty.  He has developed a particular interest in the Bariatric patient over the last few years.  He obtained his Doctor of Psychology from the Forest Institute of Professional Psycholgy and completed his graduate work from the Emporia State and Pittsburg State University.  Dr. Post runs the Behavior Modification classes, which are offered monthly at the hospital.  The classes are available to all the patients at any time at no charge.  Dr. Post enjoys contributing to our patients weight loss success and is available for questions, or one-on-one sessions at the patients request.

Exercise and Rehabilitation

Chiropractor
Rob Jones, DC

Dr. Rob Jones will be coordinating the exercise and rehabilitation services at MIS-Hospital. Dr. Jones is a chiropractor who practices in Lawrence, Kansas with an emphasis on sports injuries, exercise and rehabilitation. Dr. Jones' specialty, Active Release Therapy (ART), is a renowned soft tissue/muscle therapy that breaks up adhesions/scar tissue within muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia. With precise evaluation, bio-mechanical and postural analysis, Dr. Jones can diagnose musculo-skeletal and orthopedic problems and treat the injured area with Active Release Therapy and personally tailored rehabilitation/exercise programs.

Some of the injuries that Dr. Jones has successfully treated are plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff syndromes, tennis and golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back, and upper back and neck related pain. Dr. Jones has worked with patients ranging from college and professional athletes as well as non-athletic individuals. Dr. Jones has garnered a reputation in Lawrence for being the doctor to visit for complicated or unresponsive cases of musculo-skeletal or orthopedic problems.

What Dr. Jones will be bringing to the bariatric surgery patient is a unique brand of Circuit Training. Circuit Training is a means of exercising that utilizes both resistance training exercises and cardiovascular/aerobic activity in a timed fashion to maximize exercise efficiency. Dr. Jones or one of his assistants will be present at all Circuit Training sessions to ensure proper positional mechanics of the body, in order to maximize the exercise efficiency and minimize the chances for injury in each participant. Dr. Jones will personally tailor all the Circuit Training elements of each session, and will ensure that all fitness and ability levels will be catered to. As the individual's fitness advances, so will the Circuit Training sessions.
