I think her program is top notch and cannot wait to be more involved as my surgery date become closer and then after. She is VERY knowledgeable and answers any and all questions honestly. --- I have now had my surgery and do not believe that I could have had a better surgeon or surgery team. I arrived at the surgery center at 10 am and was home in my recliner at 3pm with no pain, just some soreness. Dr. Kaniewski even called me that evening to check on everything and was very caring & concerned. She did my stitches on the inside and I'm going to have some 'beautiful' scars compared to some railroad track scars I've seen on some other patients with other surgeons. I would recommend her, her colleagues and her entire program to anyone looking into bariatric surgery. << Back to Top >> JP Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: I met Dr. Wanda Kaniewski at one of the informational seminars that I attended. She was very receptive and open to all the questions people asked. The office staff is nice, especially her nurse/assistant she always has a smile. All of my appointments have been on time and she gives plenty of time to talk to me and let me ask questions. I have not gone to see the aftercare program that they have yet but I plan on soon. She covers all parts of the surgery, the pros and the cons. Verbally and Written Twice. I think Dr. Kaniewski is extremely competent surgeon with an incredible bedside manner. The only negative that I had actually had to do with the male x-ray tech. he was rude and almost insensitive. << Back to Top >> MT Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: My first impression of Dr. Kaniewski was her sense of style. No I am not kidding! She was dressed in a very classy Ralph Lauren outfit, which was a compliment to her knowledge as a doctor. She did a very in depth review of my medical records and did an excellent job of explaining the outcomes and the rules associated with the lap band. She took the time to answer all the questions I had and was able to get me on her surgery schedule in a short amount of time. Her staff was helpful and friendly. She does have a structured aftercare program and/or support group meeting monthly which is physician facilitated as well. << Back to Top >> TF Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: I was quite impressed with Dr. K. She seems to really want to help and she was honest about the whole process, no sugar coating it. I had my surgery on May 11 and I have had no complications. The aftercare that I have received has been great. << Back to Top >> NG Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: Dr. Kaniewski and her staff are great! I had no complications following LapBand surgery and I am over 50. Dr. K is very competent, answers all questions and has a very pleasant and helpful manner. Aftercare is very important at her facility. I am an attorney and my daughter is a 4th year medical student (both very analytical). Both of us felt that Dr. Kaniewski had the right approach, the right experience and training and the right attitude. LapBand is not a silver bullet, but it is tool that patients can use to get excess weight off and keep it off. Getting LapBand at M.I.S.H. with Dr. Kaniewski was a big step in regaining my health and my life! << Back to Top >> LW Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: I first met Dr. Kaniewski at a seminar and she was very informative and answered all questions thoroughly. Since I’m a self pay I decided based on the information provided to go ahead and make my appt for a consultation. After meeting with her again one on one I was very impressed by her manner and she has a straightforward personality that I appreciated. The office staff has been very helpful and the nurses have called me several times for various things to ensure everything was ready for my big day. She certainly stresses compliance and that this isn’t a cure all, that you must be able to follow the proper eating plan (which seems pretty simple) to achieve your maximum weight loss potential. That the surgery is a tool. She clearly explained the risks in the seminar. So far, I would rate her excellent, but I'll follow up after my surgery, which is scheduled for 5/24/2006. I find her credentials to be very good and her to be very personable as well, a good combination. I will post more after surgery. << Back to Top >> JH Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: I first met Dr. Kaniewski at the seminar and really appreciated her straightforward approach and this is just a tool. After meeting her in person April 14th I appreciated her even more. << Back to Top >> MH Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: She recognized that I didn't want a lot of discussion about the surgery -- I had done a lot of research, and came in with a "Mission Statement" so she kept things direct and to the point. I appreciate that, and it allowed us to move forward quickly. I LOVE her office staff -- they are very friendly and personable. The same is true for the surgery staff. My only disappointment was in the scarring that was left. It was a lot more noticeable than I thought it would be, and I wish I had known that before. I would not have changed anything, but I would have been better prepared for what I saw. << Back to Top >> CC Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: She was kick ass!! Super nice went through everything with us, the staff was great and the faculties were nice as well...very clean. I had no problems with the doctor nothing that I didn’t like I would suggest her to anyone considering WLS << Back to Top >> MF Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: Doctor Kaniewski and all of the people in her office have been fantastic. I was very impressed with her in the beginning, and I've become more impressed as we've moved through this process. I'm a high-risk patient because of my size (my BMI is almost 70), and I've got other health issues to boot. The pre op testing and work up have been very intensive, and I feel a lot better about the surgery after having done all of the testing. I was scheduled for surgery about two weeks ago, but a low blood pressure reading before surgery forced us to reschedule it. They took excellent care of me, and discovered a medication problem my PCP had missed. The only negatives in the experience have been the time consuming nature of it. I first met with them in May, and I'm scheduled for surgery next week. They are also out of network for many of the insurance companies here in KC, but I know they are working on that. . They are first-rate doctors; they treat their patients well, and they instill a trust that many doctors don't. I'm scheduled for surgery on 11/08; I'm looking forward to it and to being a shadow of my former self afterward. << Back to Top >> JC Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: Dr. Kaniewski is wonderful, she is very attentive to my needs and she has taken every safety precaution to ensure that this will be a breeze. I think I am her heaviest patient yet (BMI 99) so she took extra measures, which was reassuring. She is a smart soft-spoken woman who is very knowledgeable about someone like me who has been struggling all my life with obesity. She has her own full staff hospital where she can perform the surgery onsite and a website (WWW.ISAOBESITY.COM) that has a wealth of info. I would recommend her to anyone. << Back to Top >> DG Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: I really liked Dr. K. She spent a lot of time with me pre-op. She visited post-op and made sure I was doing well. At my one-week visit she spent time with me answering questions and I could tell that she really cared how I was doing. My first impression is that they are genuinely interested in the well being of their patients. The consultation went well also. I had all of my questions answered and a surgery date given that day. I love these people! What other doctor’s office can you call and be transferred to the doctor without even asking. I will let you know more after surgery. I met her at a weight-loss symposium and I was impressed that she was on time, dressed nicely and answered every question without hesitancy. Listening to her talk only confirmed that I had made the right decision. I did research on her and read her bio and was impressed with her skills, talent, knowledge and she seemed so kind hearted. When we met in her office for a consultation she laid to rest many fears I had and made me feel important and everything that I had to say was important. Being a large person the last 20 years of my life, I sometimes feel like a second-class citizen. She spent about an hour with me on that first visit, explained things in great detail. She talked to me on a level I understood and was comfortable with. She answered all my questions and treated me with dignity. << Back to Top >> KS Tell us your personal story, or tell us about yourself: The first time I met Dr Kaniewski was in a seminar to find out about what their facility offered. I was totally impressed with the facility, the information, and staff on the first encounter. I left that evening knowing I had made the correct choice in that facility/surgeon. I had my first one on one visit with Dr K on July 20th and that day was the beginning of the changes in my life. She was very honest and up front with the information and concerns regarding my weight and BMI since I was a high risk. I weighed in at 538 lbs and had a BMI of 92. She was very frank with me and told me what I needed to do in order to have the surgery. She even talked with my teenage son to express to him how important it was for me to make changes in my life. I was very impressed with her including my son and how she handled the situation. I knew my life was now in her hands and she would help me with this wonderful tool I was going to be given. I had my surgery on Sept 26th and I had no problems, no pain, no discomfort or anything and I now have a chance to have a different life, a healthy life and an opportunity to live longer because of DR K and this wonderful Tool. The staff has been fantastic and had my surgery experience a piece of cake. I owe my life to them. They have several options for support after surgery. I was told exactly what to expect and who would be there to do it. They are a well-oiled team. I am very happy I made the right choice with them. As I stated below, I am now in Kansas City, Mo so I have elected to go through the program at The Institute for Advanced Bariatric Surgery in Lenexa, KS. I went to a seminar on Oct 21st that was lead by Dr. K. My first thought was: Wow, is this really the surgeon? Once I got pass looking at this lady who didn’t look like she was a day over 25 I quickly realized that she really knew her stuff. But I was still thinking in the back of my head, I gotta find out more about her, I don't want her experimenting on me. :-) Well by the end of the seminar I was sorta convinced that she would be the one, but I would make my decision once I had my one on one consultation. The consultation was Nov 2nd and by the time it was over, there was no doubt in my mind that this was my surgeon. There was no beating around the bush or anything; she gave me facts, figures and a surgery date (pending medical clearance) right then and there. All my questions were addressed and then some. We talked about the risks, aftercare, we hit on everything. When we finished I told her I was ready. I think I got a little caught up in the moment. The office staff is wonderful. Angela, the patient coordinator is the BOMB. I feel as if I have known her for years. She and I talk regularly regarding the insurance issues. The facility is gorgeous. The lobby is very comfortable especially that soft leather couch. I almost fell asleep. I went to another seminar Nov 11, again very informative. This time I brought my mom and also invited 2 of my co-workers that are also interested in having WLS. After the seminar, I went to the nutrition class. This was lead by Ms. Kuda. All I can say is Ms Kuda knows her stuff as well. She gave out lots of info and answered lots of questions as well. So far, I have absolutely nothing negative to say regarding the program that these professionals are running. I feel like I am in the best of hands. << Back to Top >> CPT Tell us about yourself and your personal story (personal comment): Prior to surgery I was taking 250 to 300 units of Insulin daily. Would you recommend obesity surgery to a friend or family member and why? Yes - it can change your life! Some of the healing can be trying, yet it is all worth the process and results! Any comments that you would like to share with those that are considering obesity surgery? It is a very personal decision that is very serious for the patient and their family. The health benefits can not be attained the way thay are without surgery. I had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, arthritis and a low self esteem. When this surgery first became known to me, I thought it was too drastic and way too risky. After much research ans soul searching as to whether the risks were worth the gain, I decided they were - in the long term - and decided to have surgery. Tell us about your experience with the office and surgeon(s): Both my husband and I had the surgery, so we've spent considerable time with both doctors. We both had complications. Mine minor and my husband's were much more serious. I credit the doctors' conservative approach and excellent skill in saving my husbands life as well as to resolving my problem as quickly as possible. Please share any comments about the seminar/support group, your aftercare or any subject you would like to mention: The doctors are very responsive and always make themselves available, which is a comfort zone in the event of post-op problems. They return calls promptly and take all calls seriously. We hated to call, but we had to a few times and their responsiveness was impressive. Would you recommend obesity surgery to a friend or family memeber and why? I would not "recommend" the surgery because I feel it is a very serious decision that needs to be made strictly by the individual. But if they would like my opinion, I'd say I was glad I did it. I went from a size 22/24 to a size 8, lost my high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I no longer take any prescription meds and have good self esteem. I have recommended Drs. Kaniewski and Sabharwal to others who want the surgery. Any comments that you would like to share with those that are considering obesity surgery? If you decide to have weight loss surgery, I have no problems recommending these doctors - they are excellent in their field and top notch.
